GH7 vs $100,000 Arri Alexa on a REAL Production

I got a chance to put the LUMIX GH7 next to the Arri Alexa Mini LF to really see how good the ArriLog is.

And quite honestly, I’m impressed with the quality coming out of this camera. Is it a replacement for the Arri? Not in the slightest. But is it a tool to go hand in hand with one? Certainly.

All of the footage you’re seeing is from a film called No Good Legend, where I was the DP on for these saloon shots. Video for this is coming soon!

Gear I use and recommend!:

This is what I value. Real practical use. Not renting the camera and filming your cat or backyard and making a review. Thanks

Sooo, instead of renting an Alexa, just buy a GH7 with a couple more lights. Got it! 😆

It’s really nice to see a true filmmaker making a video like this! Thanks!

Thank you so much for this video! Coming from the GH5 this is the first time I'm upgrading to a new camera. I've preordered the GH7. Great to see a pro like you, pushing the GH7 to he's limit. I liked the image quality from your footage! Quite impressive for a M43 2200 US dollar hybrid camera! Thank you and thanks to Panasonic Lumix!

the in camera effect of the tiny talking head is on point here.

! Always dope vibes and video bro ! I want to let people know that It's much easier to match footage to the camera you're emulating when you have the actual camera on hand. Those without an Alexa wouldn't know the precise adjustments needed from shot to shot ! GH7 is amazing though 💯🙏🏽

I'm sure if you take more time you can really get super close to the ALEXA look. The GH7 seems more contrasty, has definitely a magenta cast (well known from Panasonic sensor) and is really more saturated. For sure, if you dial back the saturation, shift towards green, decrease the contrast and add a bit of glow to soften the image a bit, you are in the ALEXA ballpark for sure.

Great to see a real life situation instead of just someone filming a color chart in their backyard, haha!

Finally, this is great that you said that it is a very good (and cheap!) alternative when you need a B or C cam on shoot to pair with an ALEXA if you don't have the budget.

I thought Micro Four Third was dead but this video just proved me wrong.

crop factor for effectively longer lenses is 100% a valid point to like. I will use my GH6 for wildlife shots all day long over a LF camera, because I can get the same reach with half the lens size (and cost).

The 35mm film stock actually uses a space of about 22mm x 18.7mm (usually 16mm) for an image frame. Without the sound track, the space can be widened to a little less than 25mm. The "Widescreen" format shot on a 35mm film uses less than 22mm width and far less height for an image frame and the "Techniscope" format uses 22mm x 9.5mm space for an image frame. Since the Micro Four Thirds sensor is 17.3mm x 13mm, it is a lot closer to the 35mm film. An APS-C sensor is more or less the same as the 35mm film in terms of image recording space. A celluloid film, however, has a far deeper color depth and a dynamic range that is a lot smoother than a digital sensor. The Panasonic GH7 has a 13+ dynamic range. Maybe it is possible to increase the dynamic range to, say, 14+ or even 15, by enlarging the pixels while reducing the resolution to, oh, 20MP or 18MP? If so, I can start dreaming about a Panasonic GH7S. 😋

Great video man! I think the GH7 is just going to be another tool for us to be creative with

Lumix S5ii user here, you’re not wrong about the magenta shift! Always have to shift my image away from magenta when color matching to other cameras such as the fx3!

If you don't have close to the budget for even one Alexa, at least you can get close to the look with the GH7. And it will probably be "good enough" in most cases.

First!! Haha!! It’s crazy how I was just talking with my friend about the conversation this camera has stirred. I ultimately think it’s who is behind the camera to make it look the best but definitely interesting to say the least.

Yes thank you for the comparison, hopefully when your projects release you'll revisit and give us more details. I have a gh7 on preorder and think I'll keep it and definitely plan to get the arri log, given that other folks out there sell ARRI simulating luts for these camera, having something actually certified by arri is icing!

The GH7 matches impressively close to the Alexa... it's really an amazing value camera. Footage overall has a bit more of a digital look to it, which is expected, the Alexa sensor will always be more organic and softer than basically all mirrorless sensors. But when cutting the footage together with a proper color grade and watching the final product, no one will ever tell or care about the differences between the two cameras.

Love your nails bro! Seems like you’re in Cali or Vegas so I’m sure you don’t get too many looks but I’m in Nashville, TN and I painted my nails for months and so many people looked at me like wft is that. Also had people I know asked me why I would do that. 😂 Your content is dope!

Damn! What a nice video man! One question tho - did you use the GH7 with a speedbooster or did you use MFT-native glass? :)
