There's not many team owners like Eddie Jordan. The self-proclaimed ‘Irish chancer’ built his team up from nothing, staved off numerous attempts to close it down, ran some of the sport’s finest drivers and even won several Grands Prix before selling up and starting a new career in the media. On this week’s episode of Beyond The Grid, presented by Bose, EJ speaks to Tom about all these things and more – and it’s one hell of a story…

Here's a few topics discussed in this week's episode:

4m 12s – On why he had to start his own F1 team
5m 30s – On his own career behind the wheel
09m 07s – On Fernando Alonso and being in the right place at the right time
10m 30s – On why he chose a career in motor racing over dentistry!
13m 35s – His verdict on the best two drivers to sit in his cars
16m 55s – On entering F1 in 1991 and wanting to prove people wrong
19m 23s – On his lowest ebb and how he escaped losing it all.
24m 47s – The inside story on how Michael Schumacher ended up joining – and then leaving – Jordan
34m 10s – On the decision to sell his team
36m 09s – On the façade of being a rock and roll team
39m 35s – On why he doesn’t regret selling up
43m 15s – On moving into the media
43m 50s – On his legacy

The 7up Jordan 191 is the best looking F1 car ever made.

Met him in Monaco outside the entrance of the tunnel. He gladly stopped his pushbike on the side of the road to have a chat. Nice guy.

These podcasts are just brilliant, love it how the guests are free to say what they want and what we want to hear 👍🏻

I met Eddie Jordan once. What I remember most is the shrewd, analytical glance he cast my way before we got close enough to shake hands. He is a clever, crafty guy and the TV persona of a loveable rogue is pure theatre, not even close to reality. Tom Clarkson should have asked him how much GP3 team Manor paid him to get their F1 entry and how much of that ended up in Bernie's pockets...

Great interview Tom! It amazes me how few interviewers do not listen or fail to probe deeper into what is being said exactly, but you dig deep into Eddie's answers so we can find out what was really going on behind the scenes in F1 in the 90s. We learned a few interesting new facts such as what happened with Schumacher and Benetton in 91. Eddie is a good F1 pundit too, I don't know why so many fans hate him. He sees right through the 'publicocrap' we get fed by the teams and is able to tell us what's really going on!

I have to say, I had underestimated Jordan until I heard this. I imagine I'm not alone in that

It's impressive to see how Eddie managed his team budget and what he archived comparing to the context of budget cost cap of today.

Kyle Rusk... Oh yes, we definitely need a Murray Walker interview. Also, I'd love to hear Damon Hill, Alain Prost, Franz Tost, Jean Todt, Corine and Mick Schumacher, Carlos Sainz Jnr and Snr, Jos Verstappen & also maybe Bernie Ecclestone.

It's such a shame F1 has become so expensive because we will never see another Eddie Jordan in F1 again.
