Singing through a straw modifies how much air can escape the body, which allows air pressure and acoustic energy to be reflected backward from the lips, decompressing and helping the vocal folds vibrate more easily, and with less muscular effort. Basically, it works in a similar way to how an athlete trains in a GYM.

About Oren:
BSc(Hons) MBPsS DipLCM(TD) DipNYVC 25+ CPD
Oren is an award sinning singing teacher, voice researcher, and inventor of the SOVT Singing Straw. Oren is currently lecturing all around cyberspace on the topic of SOVT (also known as Straw Phonation / Water Resistive Voice Therapy / SOVT Singing Technique). Oren trained in singing and vocal technique at Royal Central School of Speech and Drama, as well as studying internationally in Holland in collaboration with the London College of Music, and with NYVC (New York Vocal Coaching).

Somehow I feel that this is THE ONLY EXERCISE that truly helps and you can feel the difference in singing RIGHT AWAY. I had a lot of problems with tension. I better keep doing these exercises. WOW!

I've been taking singing lessons for two years and I feel that I haven't made any progress.
I will start this exercise today and do it for 30 days. I will come every day to tell you how I am doing, if I improved or not (I need to improve to be able to graduate in August 2023 ie this year).
Today/day 1: it's a challenge🤯

I notice a great improvement in my shoulders, jaw and neck that were tense. (It is worth mentioning that my voice feels more relaxed when I sang today before doing the exercise) I did it for the third time now.

today I did it 3 times, in the morning while I was in the bathroom, in the afternoon at about 1 p.m. and then at 4/5 p.m.
It's amazing this exercise, I don't feel any tension, my voice has more body and I can sing some high notes better.
(Accompanied this exercise with some other exercises from this same channel and other exercises, according to what I think my voice needs).

I drink more water than usual.
I sleep better and I sleep longer.
I also eat better.

Well I've been doing this for about 45 days now and it definitely helped me go much higher, but the best part would really just be that I strain less when singing higher notes. I don't choke as much and that allows me to push further which is where the higher notes really come in.
Definitely recommend this, its probably the best vocal exercise video out there for quick results.

This is phenomenal! Been working with this for 5 days now and I have noticed so damn much increase of breathing support and vocal power. Everyone who wants to improve singing skill (fast) should go and get their SOVT Straw asap. I'm totally blown away. Thanks Jacob for pointing out on this 🤩🤩🤩

Reminder that using your head voice is ok! Try to bridge the gap. Also, using a straw with water at the other end is more therapeutic and massaging for your voice while using it dry is more of a workout and stretch.

I just bought my straws~ Doing this everyday starting March 27, 2023:

D1: Done ✅
D2: Done ✅ I notice my jaw tensing by moving forward during the exercises and I mindfully relax it when I feel it. Still cracking my voice at high notes T^T
D3: Done ✅ The glides are more easy now, I don’t crack as much! But I do kinda feel strained after doing it. Maybe the straw is too narrow?

—2 weeks break— gotten so busy but I alwys try to do siren whenever I see my straw.

D4: Done ✅ I feel strained after doing this. Maybe bc it’s been awhile or I am putting too much effort in exhaling thru the straw.

Been doing this for a week with a regular straw and it has worked I was sad about my voice before because it was always to weak and shaky, but not anymore!!! ❤❤

Day 59 tip: with the second exercise I found easy for me to breathe after 4 notes
D68 tip: don't practice these w/your chin touching your chest. This is to keep an open throat which = more power
D86 tip: practice gamakas and hum(within your range) if the video is going beyond your range(humming is a recovery exercise)

I use this tech in my daily routine. TRULY AN AMAZING WORKOUT FOR EXTREME VOCALS. (This also works with the mouth close to a tight O if you don't have a straw).
