Ya, home ownership is pushed more then it should be. I was in my mid 40's when I bought my first house. My landlord hadn't raised the rent in over 15 years so I was living super cheap which let me buy the place when my landlord retired and moved south and it's already all paid off. But even without a mortgage I'm paying more on upkeep, utilities, and taxes then I ever did while renting.

I had someone tell me there is a difference between a person who is rich and a person who is wealthy. The rich spend their money while the wealthy make money.
It has stuck with me. Watching what I do with my money is the most important.

According to several charts and stats, I'm in the 65th - 70th percentile for my net worth for my age group. But the median doesn't necessarily mean "good". I'm more concerned about myself in how I will afford life after I retire, not how I currently measure up with others.

I feel like millionaires who feel they aren't wealthy is because their wealth is locked up in a property asset. They also have money locked up in a retirement account that they can't touch. People who do feel wealthy are probably people who have liquid money they have access to now and spend it without worrying.
