Steamer mv Ilala is now approaching the Kariba Dam, one of the largest electricity stations in Africa. Building commenced in 1955 and was nearing completion of the first stage when the steamer arrived. This is the second part of an old amateur 16mm film . Viewer Colin Pryce gave the following information:
Lake Malawi and Lake Kariba are 2 totally different lakes hundreds of miles/kilometers apart. Lake Malawi is one of the Great Rift Valley lakes (Southern most) and Lake Kariba is on the Zambezi river and is man made behind the Kariba Dam, bordering Zimbabwe and Zambia.

Hi Michael, thanks for a very nostalgic clip of lake Malawi and Lake Kariba! I do have one request - please could you edit the confusing description of this video as Lake Malawi and Lake Kariba are 2 totally different lakes hundreds of miles/kilometers apart. Lake Malawi is one of the Great Rift Valley lakes (Southern most) and Lake Kariba is on the Zambezi river and is man made behind the Kariba Dam, bordering Zimbabwe and Zambia. For the viewers I must remind you that the view of the MV Ilala pitching through the waves is that she is on fresh water not the ocean! You also see a short clip of the MV Impasa, a tanker vessel on Lake Malawi (no longer sailing unfortunately).

Kariba Dam is on Zambezi river, how on earth could this vessel leave Lake Malawi then sail on Kariba Dam?
