The reason that bats hang upside down is because, unlike other birds, their wings are not strong enough to produce adequate lift to take off like a helicopter. When taking off from the ground, most birds will do some running first which would help them to lift off quickly. However, since bats' legs are two weak and cannot get enough speed. So, regarding the starting point for flying, hanging upside down from a high place can be an ideal position. The gravity can gain them the required acceleration to fly away quickly. Bats have one-way valves in their arteries which can prevent blood from flowing back to their heads, so they won't feel uncomfortable when hanging upside down.
