Don't search by the tone. Use the light and tune the sensitivity until it just comes on when you touch the red probe. It will be much easier to find the correct wire in a crowded box.

Bell and battery to check de-energized conductors for continuity. Very easy to make with 9v and piezo.

Wait so why did you connect the black hot wire to the negative on the tool? I would assume the neutral wire would go to negative and the black hot wire would go to positive 🤔

You can you a simple double AA battery…. Ive used a 9v battery when a tester wasnt available.. hell your drill battery would work perfect.. expensive tools are not needed..

I love the probe and toner from Klein, I use one but for Ethernet cables
