The Inevitable Downfall Of The Farrelly Brothers Comedy

In the 90's, The Farrelly Brothers were the kings of comedy. Films like Dumb and Dumber, Kingpin, and There's Something About Mary all dominated box offices, and fans everywhere were obsessed. Though after a few missteps it seems the Farrelly Brothers had lost the magic. With follow ups to Dumb and Dumber, and attempts at bringing 90's comedy to the 2000's, each new release would do worse than the last. The Farrelly Brothers would eventually split and focus on their own projects, but like the Coen Brothers are they better together or apart?

I loved Kingpin, one of my favorite movies.

In a lot of ways, it’s society.
Sure, “Shallow Hal” does poke fun at people with weight issues, but the message of the movie is that people truly aren’t skin deep. Hal also saw gorgeous people as butt ass ugly, but we never acknowledge that in the conversation because it’s damning for those who call the movie offensive. Then again, those who truly called the movie offensive probably didn’t even actually watch it.

I remember seeing dumb and dumber in theaters back in'94 with my mom and my brother. Our family is a little astranged and doesn't really talk as much as they should, but I do have fond memories of watching that movie as a family and laughing hysterically and enjoying each other's company. 94 Seems like a lifetime ago.

My wife and I are overweight and we loved Shallow Hal. We still watch it once in awhile. It’s about loving people no matter who they are. Some viewers didn’t get it.

1994 was the best movie year ever. Comedy and Drama basically peaked.

I actually really liked The Three Stooges. The casting was spot on and the gags were very much in the spirit of the short films

Still one of my favorite scenes in all of comedy, from Kingpin:
Roy, "Get up. We gotta go! Be very quiet."
Ishmael, "What's going on Mr. Munson?"
Roy, "Be QUIET."
Roy slips and falls in the dark motel room and says, "Ah! I think I tore my sack!"
Ishmael, "Are you okay, Mr. Munson?"
Roy, "What did I JUST say?"
Ishmael, "'Ah, I think I tore my sack?'"
Roy, "No! Be quiet!"
It's so silly and immature, but good Lord, that scene had my sides hurting from laughing so hard! I still blurt out "Ah, I think I tore my sack" if I slip or fall down around the house to this day. Thankfully, I'm pleased to report that I have not, in fact, ever torn anything of the sort, but that one line has become part of the lexicon of my life, haha.

Who even asked for a Dumb and Dumber 2? Like most sequels they rarely succeed!

Hall Pass was actually really funny and I still quote it. I remember liking Stuck on You at the time but don't think I'd revisit it.

My top 10 favorite comedy films: 10 Old Scool, 9 Me Myself and Irene, 8 Austin Powers, 7, Anchorman, 6 The Naked Gun, 5 Stepbrothers, 4 There is Something about Mary, 3 The 40 year old Virgin, 2 Dumb and Dumber, 1 King pin. Comedy films were my favorite genre when they were still allowed to be made. The Farrely Brothers gave me many wonderful evenings in the 90s. I watched Dumb and Dumber, King Pin and There is something about Mary almost every week and I can quote them. Wonderfully crude humor without taking into account all kinds of delicate souls. Unfortunately, those times are over and nowadays I have to content myself with superhero films with jokes like Deadpool.

Me, Myself and Irene is one of my all time favorite comedies, I miss comedy movies and it's sad that these movies wouldn't get made today. I think the culture will change again and things will be less PC. I was never really into Judd Apatow comedies.

Shallow Hal is a great movie and is definity not offensive. if someone sees it as offensive they are missing the point of the movie.

The scene where Hal goes back to the children’s hospital and realises that all the kids were burns victims is something that I still think about all the time. There was no need for a movie that stupid to have something that heart-breaking in it.

I might be able reenact every scene in There’s Something About Mary.

Shallow hal mightve caused a controversy and probably would be lambasted these days but it's still hilarious and a classic to the people who were around when it released. I will always hold a special place for their comedy movies, I wore out the tapes of their movies specifically dumb and dumber, they shaped my comedy taste and even though they really fell off in the 2000s they definitely go down in movie history.
