"it's completely impossible that a greek word that has to do with rotation is the same as another greek word that looks very similar and also has to do with rotation" - Tom Scott

that whole "döner sounds like its not spinning" convo is so funny to me as a turkish person cause döner literally means "it spins" lmao

Tom: I am perplexed, discombobulated and befuddled by the implications and ramifications of this coincidental linguistic synergy and synchronicity.

Bill (wincing in pain): You wrap it up and the MEAT SPINS Tom!

Took me a while, as the pronounce it "Dona", to get that they are talking about what in my part of the world is called "Döner".

I never would have expected Tom Scott of all people not to know about Gyro's roots. For me that's such a well known fact, but then again I am part greek

"meatspin" oh no...
Also, as a Turk: the ö in döner is closest to the i in bird
Shawarma is indeed ultimately from Turkish çevirme (to turn around, pronounced che-veer-meh) but via Arabic

I keep imagining The Knack singing about "muh-muh-muh-my shawarma!"

As a Greek, yes, "gyro" is because the meat is spinning on a spit before you carve it off and put it on flatbread. Add tzaziki, and it's DELICIOUS!

Also, your book is now in my wishlist on Amazon. Congrats!

The one with the sweet sauce is specifically a "Halifax donair", definitely a regional thing.
Here in southern Ontario we have gyros, souvlaki, and doners/donairs pretty much equally represented.
