Magnetic Oxygen

Показать описание
Oxygen molecules have two unpaired electrons which renders molecular oxygen paramagnetic. This paramagnetism can be demonstrated with liquefied oxygen which is attracted towards strong magnets. The spins of these unpaired electrons have three possible spin states. Two of these cancel out and one results in paramagnetism. Super strong magnets such as neodymium magnets are strong enough for laboratory demonstration of this paramagnetism.

I saw some mention of research into use of magnets to filter out oxygen from air (I’m sure I’m describing it wrong) recently. Your demonstration is a great way to show the magnetic properties of oxygen. Thanks for taking the time to record it.

thank you. this helps me in my theory of atomic structure, where the internal arrangement of protons and neutrons are disk like instead of just random jumbles of particles crammed together. again, thank you.

How much attraction do you see with gaseous oxygen?
