Projects to Watch | Route 50 & Highland St Safety Pilot

In spring 2025, Arlington County will install temporary safety treatments in collaboration with the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) at the intersection of Route 50 & N/S Highland St using tactical in-street materials (signs, markings, flex posts). This intersection was selected for the pilot because it had the highest left turn/through crash rate for an unsignalized intersection along the Route 50 corridor. Based on the results of this pilot project, Arlington and VDOT may consider implementing this treatment along Route 50 before construction begins on the permanent safety project in 2030.

Finally! I’ve been talking about this for years. The simple yellow pilings have helped improve traffic safety around the county and I’m very happy that they’re implementing this strategy.
