The 'gif' debate is just semantics bullshit.

Jif sounds better to me, which is why I pronounce it that way. Don't care how other people pronounce it, I never correct them on it. If they try to argue that I'm saying it wrong I just fart really loudly.

Just a side note. Saying J-P-G instead of j-peg is objectively wrong, because JPG is a shortened form of JPEG which is an acronym for Joint Photographic Experts Group. The only reason the E was dropped was because of a Windows constraint on file name extensions.

Yep, that's how "Фарид" is pronounced. You did surprisingly good job pronouncing it perfectly.
And you nailed pronunciation of "гифка" (gifka) one time - "gif"[miniscule pause]"ka"(as in "car")

that's such an english problem. i love to be a native german speaker, because we pronounce everything 'the way its written'. which means every letter in the alphabet is always pronounced the same. so no debating needed

i find gif easier to say than jif, because the j sound takes more effort to force out, especially if one is very soft spoken. and it sounds nicer, the short quick g sound, rather than the harsh j

I like the explanation of the writing first confusion on pronunciation. It reminds me of when I was a stupid tiny child and, before I saw the first Harry Potter movie, I thought Hermione was pronounced 'Her-MEE-own' I don't know how I managed that since I was five when that movie came out so I couldn't have possibly read the book before seeing the movie, but I very distinctly remember being surprised by the actual pronunciation.

I use both pronunciations interchangeably. I prefer "jif", though. It is just easier to say.

It seems to me that the soft g and short i of "jif" is faster, smoother, and easier to say than a hard g and long i. So if "easier to say" is the criteria, then "jif" like the peanut butter wins.
