Mixing sodium with mercury

preview_player
Показать описание
Mercury is easily able to form alloys with most other metals. It's pretty common to combine sodium and mercury, which can be fun, and a bit dangerous. I did this on my main channel, and I basically just shoved sodium metal into mercury. The reaction generates a lot of heat, and it's usually enough to boil the mercury, and light the sodium on fire.

A while ago, I moved all of my shorts here. Sorry if there's any confusion, you're already on my main channel!

"Which can be fun, and dangerous" This is usually the case in chemistry

Ah yes, vaporized mercury and burning sodium metal. My favorite combination.

"boil the mercury" is a terrifying thing to hear

Bro I thought the sodium was cheese, I'd die in a lab.

Nile: Mercury is the only metal that’s a liquid in room temperature
Me who lives in the tropics: Gallium

"which can be fun, and a little bit dangerous" is a good summary of Niles channels

As soon as the video started my first thought was "I wanna drink it"

Nothing like a cup of boiled mercury in the morning.

Chemistry is so fun and weird:
- Chlorine is toxic to humans when inhaled or ingested.
- Sodium explodes on contact with water
- Combine them together, and you get ... table salt

Fun and dangerous when combined make something more addictive than any drug.

"Which can be fun, and dangerous"
yes i would be willing to take that risk for entertainment

"A bit dangerous", you say.

Ah yes. A combination of "poison liquid metal" and "explodes on contact with water" is just a bit dangerous

For those saying Gallium is also a liquid at room temp, In Chemistry Room Temp is considered to be roughly 25°C whereas Gallium melts at 29.76°C so yeah it's not liquid at room temp

For anyone wondering, Mercury is the ONLY metal liquid at room temp. Gallium and Caesium both become liquid at a temp slightly higher than Mercury.

Fun fact: If one of the metals in the alloy is mercury, it's termed as 'amalgam'. Here, since we are using sodium, the alloy formed is 'Sodium Amalgam'
