"Sakura", is a traditional Japanese folk song depicting spring, the season of cherry blossoms. It is often sung in international settings as a song representative of Japan.

Contrary to popular belief, the song did not originate in ancient times; it was a popular, urban melody of the Edo period.

Melody
The "Sakura Sakura" melody has been popular since the Meiji period, and the lyrics in their present form were attached then. The tune uses a pentatonic scale known as the In scale.

Expressed as diatonic notes in the major scale, the In scale is 3, 4, 6, 7, 8 (1), 10 (3); or the notes E F A B c e[1] (nominally A minor); or in solfège Mi Fa La Ti Do Mi. The melodic scale can either be represented in older Western musical theory by the Phrygian minor or the Phrygian major mode, with the 3rd and 7th notes in the scale omitted.

Because the melody spans a modest range, it is ideally suited to instruments that have a limited pitch range, such as the Native American flute (similar to the Shakuhachi).[2] The melody arranged by Ongaku Torishirabe-gakari was included in Collection of Japanese Koto Music issued in 1888, for beginning koto students in the Tokyo Academy of Music.[3]

Lyrics
The original lyrics[4] are listed as the second verse in the table below. In 1941, the Ministry of Education published a new verse in Uta no hon (うたのほん 教師用 下) which was listed first, with the original verse listed second.[5]

When I was in elementary school, every year in music class we would have a program where we sang songs from different places in the world. This was one of them that we sang in the program one year. It still sticks with me to this day. :)

This song makes me nostalgic for the first time I went to the Japanese fall festival in Springfield Missouri. It was a beautiful warm September day in 2017. I met many people, I tried on yukata for the first time (which made me feel beautiful), I watched shows, drank matcha and got a sunburn. It was a wonderful day and is a fond memory.

I am Javanese. I found some similarity between Javanese and Japanese old/traditional song. They sounds heavenly, soft like a feather but also gloomy at the same time. It always uses gloomy melody even if the lyrics ain't showing anything gloomy at all and at the very ends of the song it always uses the low tone. It give the gloomy vibes even more.

So, javanese and japanese traditional song for me, so beautiful yet creepy to hear. Imagine if you hear somebody sing this song in the middle of the night

Somehow this lovely song brings forth a vision of eternity, the bane of ambitions, the thunderings of the merciless and the almighty violet thunder. I wonder why.

I'm French, living on my native Reunion Island (an island with a lot of cultural diversity).
And I remember that in secondary school, when I was in 5th grade, our music teacher arrived and told us that we were going to learn a song called Sakura Sakura, which we had to learn every day in order to evaluate ourselves afterwards.
But what I remember is that from the first words of the song I felt transported, so when I got home I showed my mother the lyrics and told her I'd look them up on the internet. Unfortunately I'd never found a similar song, or even the same one.
And this evening I finally found it, after 5 years since college, and I was finally able to appreciate again this magical song that had made me dream.

Ps: Me and my friend got good marks in our singing exams. 😸

💜Thank you for sharing this wonderful song, I hope that one day I'll be able to travel to Japan and visit this country that fascinates me so much. 💙
