Hey everyone! I've been getting a lot of questions about how I stay on budget at the grocery store, so I figured the best way to answer those questions would be to show you an example of a week of groceries. As I mention in the video, the items I pick up each week does vary depending on sales, what I'm out of, etc. but I hope there's something in this video that helps those of you who may be students like me, and are trying to navigate the world of grocery shopping on your own.

I took a health comm class once and my professor said that going to the farmers market before it closes is a great way to get good deals on produce! The sellers are getting ready to leave and want to get rid of as much stuff as they can and so they'll sale it for super cheap. So check the times of the farmers market and try to go towards the end!

When my non dairy milk gets close to its date I put it in ice cube trays and freeze it! So good dropping them into iced coffee / smoothies and it saves me throwing it out!!

Get the app called Flipp, it has all the flyers for grocery (and other) stores here and you can see what is on sale and make the list right on there. Love it as a student, quick and saves you money

This was so helpful for grocery budgeting! I'm heading to University this fall, & it's so nice to have some tips & tricks for grocery shopping. I would also love to see a pantry video!

Yes i'd love to see a pantry tour! :)
I agree farmers markets are so great for produce, i know there are a lot of places that have them early on the weekends which is also great for making you more productive in the weekends!!!
New Zealand unfortunately doesn't really offer student discounts at grocery stores, but a tip I have, which may not save time but definitely does save money is shopping around at different stores, so i tend to buy my vegetable & fruit from a produce shop, and for meat eaters, i buy my meat from the butchers! (also buying meat in bulk, and then separating into portions and freezing them is great for saving time and $$).

also for meat eaters, I like checking the price of meat per kg on different packages as some times the biggest packs are cheaper per kg, meaning you're having to spend more at the time but can save you money for the next few weeks!

also buying just the essentials from the grocery store like toothpaste, shampoo etc, quite often the produce and meat stores will have cheaper milk and eggs so i always look at those two first before going to grocery store for other bits!

Also really loving your videos Caitlin, as a second year student at Uni as well i find your tips really helpful and inspirational :)

I would definitely love a pantry haul! Always interested in new ideas as a student on a budget, who always plans and has a chaotic life (and is also Canadian) :)

When I make curry, soup, chili and pastasaus, I make a big batch of it, eat 1 portion and freeze the other in ziplock baggies. 1 x cooking, 6 x eating! And this way you can buy bigger boxes instead of the smaller, which is cheaper

I loved this video, especially from an Ontario perspective. I'm headed to uni soon and have to start cooking for myself so this is super helpful! Thank you!!

One tip is to always get the store card of the grocery store you go to and register the card online. They send you savings based on what you buy. When I lives i Utah I had a Smiths card (smiths is like utahs kroger) and they would have free fridays where you get an item for free just for having the card. Here in Australis I have a flybys and that works by points and i got 10 dollars discounted the other day. Get the card. Register the card!

I do the best with not going over budget and not wasting food when I plan out what meals I am going to make. It keeps me on track and easier to shop when I do it. Now if only I would do that every week.

I do eat meat, so my tip for buying chicken is to look for special store prices or sales. Yesterday I bought a pack of chicken thighs (about 800gr) for only $5 at Sobeys! Also using such apps as Checkout 51 (cash back), Save.ca (coupons & fliers), Flipp (coupons) helps. Cheers!

I live in Ontario, so I know our prices are high. But I'm still kind of shocked that they charged you a dollar per apple. I must be going to the cheap stores! :)

That is not enough food for three meals a day for one week.

One thing I do to save money is to sign up for your grocery store loyalty program, in my case they actually have an app and you can look ahead of time for online coupons to load onto your loyalty card, I'll just sit the night before when I'm creating my grocery shopping list and add any relevant coupons so when they scan my card at checkout the coupons are loaded, it's so much easier than paper coupons which I feel like I always forget to clip out and bring with me to the store.

Are there any other flavorings or sugar added to the non-dairy milk for coffee or is it just a smaller container? I have the same problem I don't use it fast enough but never thought about the coffee ones, but I don't want it flavored. Thanks! Great video ☺️
