Hey friends, in this video I go through Dr Matthew Walkers' book "Why We Sleep" and pull out some of the fascinating - and at times shocking - things I learnt about the importance of sleep and the effects of sleep deprivation on our bodies and minds.

DISCLAIMER:
1. THIS is NOT MEDICAL ADVICE. If you have any sleep or health concerns please consult your doctor.

2. This is not a scientific journal/analysis/review - I am sharing what I learnt from what I believe to be a reputably sourced book. All information is referenced in the book.

3. This video is not designed to scare you about not having the perfect sleep habits. A lot of of us don’t and that’s life. I was just astonished that sleep has never made up a component of any health counselling I have witnessed or given so I wanted to talk about it. There are multiple bio-psycho-social risk factors associates with everything I mention - sleep may just happens to be ONE of them.

28 years ago when my daughter was born and was diagnosed with reflux, I became a zombie sleeper for approximately 1 year. This had a profound effect on my sleep still to this day. The anxiety I felt for a year has had an ongoing effect. I remember saying to so called ‘specialists’ that I need help with this anxiety/sleep deprivation. Unfortunately I was not treated seriously. Now my anxiety seems to continue to affect my sleep pattern. I have tried many things including both meditation and medication without success. After listening to your vlog I realised I need to continually manage my anxiety level.

@Surina Taneja
A great vid on the importance as well as quality of sleep . Too often medical professionals just hand out a prescription for more drugs.
@motivationaldoc has a great vid on having a banana with Ceylon( Sri Lankan) cinnamon and the benefits of eating before bedtime to assist in a better sleep.

I have tried it and it works, noting an increase in dreams . I then skipped banana/cinnamon one night and no dreams, poor sleep.
Ceylon cinnamon is important as othrr types can have a chimical present which damages the liver I found from further research.
An aside, raw cacao is a very effective natural anti depressant I use actively. Keep up the good work.

I have ME/CFS, central sleep, apnoea part controlled with meds (I am severely bedridden) and poor/ disturbed/ unrefreshing sleep is a recognised part of it. I’m scared to read about the harm of lack of sleep when so far I’ve not found anything except medication to give me any sleep and even then I never get eight hours good - multiple wake ups, short deep sleep or no REM etc. most of the lifestyle things such as daylight, exercise etc are not options.
