One of the major participants in the internet gold rush at the time was Yahoo. Although it wasn't the first, the idea behind it was really sound.

The Yahoo founders had the wonderful notion, back when the internet was still extremely little, to compile all the unknown websites into a clean, hand-picked directory that would be exceedingly user-friendly. In actuality, the Yahoo search engine was never the main aim and instead developed as a result of the directory.

The Yahoo design team actually tried placing the search bar at the bottom of the site rather than at the top at one point early in the development process.

In these early years, Yahoo saw extraordinary success. It was among the first businesses to use banner advertisements, which at the time were essentially the first significant online revenue source.

Although the early banner advertising were simple, they were quite successful. Initially, businesses would pay $10,000 a month to essentially rent space on the Yahoo homepage, much like a billboard.

Yahoo would later begin billing its advertisers based on impressions, or the number of times consumers saw their banner adverts, as technology advanced.
