California healthcare company Kaiser Permanente has settled two racial discrimination lawsuits for $18.9 Million. The first of these suits, alleging that the company discriminated against employees based on race, was settled for $11.5 Million. The lawsuit alleges that Kaiser Permanente's African-American employees are underpaid and held back from promotion.

The second suit, similarly asserting that Kaiser Permanente pays its Hispanic employees less than its white employees, was settled for $7.4 Million. Michael Cuenca brought forth the case on behalf of over 2,000 Hispanic employees working for Kaiser Permanente.

As part of the two settlements, Kaiser Permanente agreed to institute new programs to ensure that their African-American and Hispanic employees are paid fairly and given equal opportunity to advance within the company. Leading up to this settlement was a lengthy negotiation process.

Kaiser Permanente has said that while they dispute some of the claims made in the suit, they understand how important it is to learn from their employees. The company claims it will continue to advocate for fair treatment and equity at all levels of its organization.
