The Biden administration has faced accusations of double standards online after stating it does not support Taiwan's independence on the same day it announced Ukraine would join NATO.
On Thursday, White House National Security adviser John Kirby said the Biden administration does not support Taiwan's independence.
Kirby's remarks came after a reporter on Thursday asked about President Joe Biden's phone call with President Xi Jinping of China.
"I won't characterise President Xi's comments, but I can tell you that President Biden was very, very clear that nothing's changed about our one China policy," he said.
'We don't support independence for Taiwan, but we also don't wanna see the status quo changed in a unilateral way, and certainly not by force."
On Thursday US Secretary of State Antony Blinken also announced Ukraine would become part of NATO.
Social media users reacted to perceived double standards by the US in supporting democracies.
"Wow. They don’t support Taiwan but support Ukraine joining NATO? Is is because hunter Biden is not doing business with Taiwan?," one X user wrote.
"John Kirby with the direction of the Biden administration abandoned Taiwan and just gave China the green light to 'reunify' Taiwan with the 'mainland'," another user wrote.
"Another country to collapse and get lost under Joe Biden and the Democratic Party."
