Carl Flentge Schalk (1929–2021) held a long and distinguished career as composer, author, and Lutheran church musician. Educated at Concordia University and the Eastman School, Schalk taught church music at Concordia University in Chicago from 1965–2004 and held a number of church positions. He served on the committee for the 1978 Lutheran Book of Worship and was the editor of the journal Church Music from 1966–80. As a composer, Schalk was most active in the composition of hymn tunes and choral music. He is particularly noted for his hymn collaborations with poets Jaroslav Vadja and Herbert Brokering.

I love the way that, at the opening, a fragment of the theme spreads like bell tower answering bell tower, then the full statement of the theme seems like all humanity singing. Another wondrous gem from this special channel.
