I can still hear my granddad's voice as recorded on his answering machine (yes, an answering machine; cassette tape recorder attached to a phone attached to a wall) very distinctly in my memory... but only when I think about his answering machine. When I think about my granddad, I think about him and things he said and places we were, but the exact tone of his voice is always clearest when I remember that answering machine
