Right before this happened, Rolling Stone magazine came out with its Top 100 guitar players. Prince was NOT listed. That's why he was encouraged by Tom Petty to "tear it up" on this performance.

Prince wasn't included in ROLLING STONE magazine's "TOP 100 GUITARIST LIST."
This performance came after that.
Thus, the walk-off.
Prince took that evening as an opportunity to show the world what does ROLLING STONE magazine really know about evaluating talent.
Honestly, prior to this performance, I viewed Prince as MOSTLY, a singer and pianist. I honestly paid little attention to his guitar work. This video (and now others) has brought my attention to his stellar guitar skills. HE'S A PERFORMER!!! JUST PLAYING GUITAR YOU CAN'T TAKE YOUR EYES AWAY BECAUSE HE'S HANDLING THE GUITAR UNLIKE MOST PLAYERS DO WHILE PLAYING!!! IT'S A PERFORMANCE WITHIN A PERFORMANCE!!!
I am 60 years old right now. Tomorrow, I will buy a replica(EASTWOOD GUITAR) of that telecaster Prince played and learn from scratch, how to play like Prince.
Which means I'll live for a thousand years. Lol

RIP PRINCE. He left us 7 years ago today. He did not even rehearse this. He asked for some time for a solo at the end. He is the GOAT, self taught and played 27 instruments well. He was left off of the magazine Rolling Stones, of the top 100 best guitar players of all times. He definitely showed them that they made a grave mistake. 💜💜💜
