WHO cautions against mixing COVID-19 vaccines, even as experts say it's safe

A new message from the World Health Organization's (WHO) chief scientist Dr. Soumya Swaminathan created confusion, especially for Canadians, after she advised not to mix and match COVID-19 vaccines, calling it a "dangerous trend" and that there was not enough data to support the medical efficacy of the method.

But in Canada, hundreds of thousands of people followed the government's recommendation to mix and match vaccines, such as AstraZeneca followed by an mRNA vaccine. The National Advisory Committee on Immunization (NACI) advised it was safe to do so, and Nova Scotia's chief medical officer of health Dr. Robert Strang agreed, adding there was "clear evidence" the two mRNA vaccines could also be mixed.

As Jamie Mauracher reports, the mixed messaging is doing little to help vaccine hesitancy.

When I got my second shot, I walked into a vaccination center and found out that I was gonna get Moderna; even though, my first shot was Pfizer. So, I was reluctant to go in. At the door I was explaining to a doctor that some doctors have cautioned of not mixing vaccines. Her reply was simply "I'm a doctor!" She didn't even want to concede that there are different opinions about the subject. It's sickening how some doctors think of themselves.

Several months ago someone from Moderna said mixing their vaccine was not recommended. I'm sure part of that is self interest but it's also very reasonable as they probably know their product better than anyone.
