Man, I wish a study like this was done in one of my design classes when I was in college. I probably would have had a better understanding of shading and value in my drawings and sketches.

I wouldn't give the outter boxes the same vanishing point as the central box. It distorts the depth he's trying to depect. Secondly, I would also use sketch lines to mark out the transition points in the gradient at specific points across all boxes. It will make it look more consistent. That way it doesn’t mess too much with the eyes. But it's a great video tutorial.

This could have been done much more realistically. If the light were coming from above and to the right, the top surface would be the darkest. Then the right inside would be slightly lighter. Then the left inside would be even lighter. Then, the bottom would be even lighter. Then, you could cast shadows on the left inside from the top and right sides. That shadow would then be the darkest at the top edge.
