Since there's probably other people watching that might not know: one of the reasons gay marriage was a big deal was due to the legal implications of marriage. If you don't have that marital status, you can be refused visitation to and information on a hospitalized partner for example, and in those cases the family is often contacted to have decision-making for the hospitalized individual — which isn't always a very desirable thing in the queer community. Marriage is also a very important status for a lot of government-ran programs, taxes, etc. So it was more to do with gay relationships being refused the same rights and privileges as straight relationships.
