Journey through the Universe

This 4-minute animation takes you on a flight that starts on Earth and travels one billion light years into space and back. It features data recorded by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey collaboration. The trip begins at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory, which has made major contributions to the development, realization and operation of large-scale sky surveys for more than 25 years, including SDSS, the Dark Energy Survey, the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument and the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope. The SDSS collaboration began regular sky survey operations in 2000, after a decade of design and construction. Using the data recorded over the last 20 years, the SDSS collaboration has created the most detailed three-dimensional maps of the universe ever made, with deep multi-color images of one third of the sky, and spectra for more than three million astronomical objects.

At the end, I was hoping for zoom to Dr. Don saying: "Hi there, physics fans..."

This video instantly stopped me from worrying about what other people think of me

'every spot u see now is a galaxy' just blew my mind.

I can't believe Fermilab still exists after the 2 billion+ years it took to travel and see all that stuff.

we know this level of detail about eh universe, yet people still argue over the earth being flat - insane

If only my brain could retain this sort of perspective, I'd be a much happier human if I could just internalise how little everything actually matters in the grand scheme of things.

Just wondering about how big will be my mileage points after this flight

Retired astronomy professor, used to teach the old classical approach called the powers of 10. This video is a Quantum Leap Forward!! A must for all young scientists!!

Seeing such videos makes me feel terribly insignificant and that feeling actually gives me a very peaceful feeling.

Thinking about everything that is out there never fails to blow my mind. The amount we've been able to figure out about physics and the nature of reality is remarkable. At the same time, we know so very little.

Very nice presentation and relaxing voice for the voice over. Music was low enough not to be annoying. Thank you. ;~)

The most fascinating is that the view travels much faster than the speed of light

This was incredible and I will share it with my Physics and Astronomy students this fall!

Its weird when you imagine this cosmic web is not only a web through space, but also billions of years through time.

Nice animation. I would have liked to see an on screen readout of the distance from Earth.

I know we are just a speck of dust, but it's still so mind blowing every time I am reminded of our reality..
