Since root x + root y is an integer, root x and root y are integers; x and y are square numbers; x, y and 9 are the squares of a Pythagorean triple. 16+9=25 instantly pops into mind. A quick check and we are done.

One more way is square both sides rootx + root y =9 then you get x+y +2rootx rooty =81 then put 2rootx rooty one side and square it again you get the equation which upon comparison with sq(x+y) = sq(x-y) +4xy we get simply x+y =41. This way we need not calculate x and y separately we get the value of their sum which is 41

better way, if u take the √y to RHS and then square the equation. Then just substitute x-y in the equation and hence get the values. (x = 5, y= 4)
