Instead of another test drive after lubricating it, I have used a drill to spin cable and all. If I remember correctly, it spins counter-clockwise. But that was a long time ago, so memory might be wrong. Great job on getting it diagnosed and working again.

I had that same noise in a 70 El Camino years ago. Turned out the bushing in the speedo was loose and squealed. But your ideas for finding the real problem is brilliant!

To lube the cable you're supposed to use 30wt motor oil, and for the actual speedometer never ever use ANY oil or petroleum products on it. If you need to lube the friction points use ONLY silicon based lube OR preferably graphite lube. The petroleum lube will disrupt the calibration and cause drag, even after you apply it, and later as it dries out and binds up or gets tacky, causing the problem you are trying to solve. Chlorinated Brakeleen is what you want to use for cleaning. It will dissolve the oil but not harm the other parts. Trichlorethylene which is brake cleaner is the same chemical as dry cleaning solvent or electronic cleaner. It would be 'non-flammable' brake cleaner. If you're in California, good luck, your S.O.L.

My speedometer "jumps" about 5 mph, probably the same problem. I've never dropped my column, will this be an easy fix? I have a BASIC knowledge of tools, lol!
Thanks SO much for ALL the pumpkin videos!
Looking forward to seeing the next project!

So my Speedo bounces as the weather gets cooler. It’s the cable, but I just deal with it.

I have a few 68 clusters and I know exactly what you meant by the difference in resistance between the 2. Good to know how to fix the sticky ones tho!
