Solingen is THE German city for traditional cutlery, like Detroit once was for American cars. Mercator is the model name and Latin for "Kaufmann" (merchant) which is the name of the knife's designer. Today the knife is produced by the German company "Otter Messer". They also produce a newer version with a pocket clip.

I think adding thumb studs and what not deters from the nostalgia this knife offers. I too love flippers on knifes, but this one rocks as is!! Great video!

Probably the best folding/locking pocket knife to ever be produced thus far in terms of reliability/practicality, or for all intensive purposes, a solid cutting tool. I Strongly recommend adding a brass "kwik" thumb stud. They can be purchased on ebay for about 5$ or less and usually come with the necessary allen wrench for installation, makes an already great knife even greater as it enables one hand use. Shame they never incorporated a pocket clip onto the classic K55K version. However I have had the brass with clip and was best knife I have ever owned but have since lost it. Which is a bummer cuz after several acetone scrubbings/torching, it had quite a beautiful patina developing, as well as one on the carbon blade. Now to replace it I have to decide if I want to go with traditional form and get k55k or get another brass and go thru all that patina developing process again. Hmmm... BTW "Soligen" or whatever it's called is the location where the knives are made in Germany. Great video thanks!

Just got one. Love a pocket knife with interesting history. VERY stiff out of the package. I oiled the shit out of it hoping that lockback becomes a little friendlier on the thumb. Super cool knife. thanks for the review.

It can be opened one hander by just gripping the spine and giving it a flick. Does require some nimble finger movements but works if you don’t have a second hand available for whatever reason.

Does the lock back mechanism use a tension bar or does the handle give tension to the lock bar.

Wow, the Buck 110 is a complete ripoff of that knife. Utterly shameless.

These knives have been laser cut since the 1800’s.
