Timestamps and links are in the description here, please read down :)

In this video we explain how to back up your FL Studio Project files.
This should work in any DAW but this is specifically for FL Studio 12. We show how to create a project folder, how to export a zipped loop package (or zip file) and how to export all the stems ready for backing up to an external hard drive or online file storage.

This is a really simple and short video and the technical aspects are over within 4 minutes. At the end of the video I talk about why it's important to do backups and how we do our backups.

Thanks for watching,

Michael

TIMESTAMPS

1) 0.55 - Making a project folder to keep the data safe
Go to Options - File Settings - Project TAB - Set data folder using the folder icon.

2) 2:00 - How to zip a folder to keep it safe in case of a crash - File - Export - Export as zipped loop file . Save this new folder onto an external hard drive

In short, export as a wav file but check the "Split mixer track" button to export all the stems at the same time :)

Man appreciation isn’t the word, you’ve helped me in so many ways. Things that seem tedious aren’t after you break them down. Thank you so much 🙏🏾

Thank you so much for this video 🙏🏼 it helps a ton. I just accidentally deleted 56 GB of Data I had and lost all of my vocal samples on all of my unfinished projects from the last 3 years 😅 kind of got smacked in the face by the universe. But now I’m on a fresh start and can go in now knowing how to back up my projects so thank you 🙏🏼 and I believe everything happens for a reason so no time was wasted it’s all part of the journey and we are always growing and getting better every step of the way. It was very stressful letting go of all of that but I have now fully accepted it and I’m ready to recreate these projects even better and start more new chapter with the peace of mind of having back ups 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼

When saving/exporting mixer tracks always, always, always save or back them up as a floating-point (32-bit or 64-bit). This saves your audio at a very high quality and if your audio is clipped, you can simply turn it down and rebalance your mix while preserving all of your transients/dynamics. Please don't forget this!

So if I want to have my files organized by project folders I would need to select a folder per project every time I create a new project? I feel that FL Studio needs to improve this. When you use Logic Pro or Ableton, once you save a project, all contents from that folder will be on a dedicated project folder of that project itself automatically. If FL manages to make this automatic, It would be amazing. I love FL but I feel they need a bit of an improvement in file management so it can be a bit more user friendly.

I know this video is from 2018, but yet its good info. I love your channel Michael. Keep being amazing!

The amount of times I've loaded up a project that was fine last time I worked on it and for some unbeknownst reason everything is out of time, missing or freaking out.... It has had me soooo mad I've felt like just giving up on my art. You're so correct about walking away and having a moment lol. Learning how to zip up projects and move them around safely has helped me so much, especially since I reformat my OS every year in a bit of computer spring cleaning. Thank you.
