I read the full manga but they honestly nailed the style for me in this anime... although people thought it was ugly, i thought it was really intense and real because of it (in this context!)

It's not underrated. The manga is amazing, but the anime is poorly done so no one took it seriously, and some of the fans in Japan actually made the studio lose money for this adaptation
