I climbed a tree in Texas when I was a kid and wrapped my arm around the other side without realizing one of these was on the tree trunk. The pain is delayed. It starts out itchy, but then it rendered the entire right side of my body immobile for about 8 hours. Super sharp pain in my armpit and the pain pulsates the whole time. It’s like when your foot falls asleep and you get that annoying tingling burning feeling, but 100x worse. Lots of sweating and muscle spazzing. ER was full so I had to ride it out. Definitely a scary caterpillar to encounter, and a reminder to check what you’re digging into or climbing on very carefully.

Pain like I've never experienced before. Felt like my wrist was broken, and I had just pulled it out of a fire. It lasted for several hours and radiated from my wrist up my arm and across my chest. I went to urgent care, but they blew me off as a drug seeker because they had never heard of an asp caterpillar before. I begged them to Google it, but they sent me away with nothing but a $250 bill. That's American health care for you.

Fun fact, that is the caterpillar of the southern flannel moth, they come in a ton of varieties but are extremely recognizable due too their shape, and the furs. Each one of those strands is actually a stinger, it is not fluffy, but extremely painful.

Accidentally laid my hand down on one of those when I was younger. The pain is intense to say the least. I still had the tiny "hairs" working their way out of my hand weeks later
