Mt Aspiring in a day

Running up and down Mt Aspiring/Tititea (3033m) with Alastair McDowell, Rose Pearson & Hamish Fleming, trailpine style.
Nearing the end of summer, Mt Aspiring, one of the most beautiful of NZ's 3000m peaks, is all but bare of snow. This makes for ideal conditions to take it on in a lightweight style. Crampons weren't even needed for the whole ascent!
Each of us had previously climbed the NW ridge over 3-4 days staying in the huts and carrying large packs. Stripping away all but the bare essentials for a day trip made for an exhilarating fast-paced day out and a completely different experience.
Once we realised that it might be possible to go under 12 hours... the race was on!

Walked into Aspiring Hut in September 2023, reliving an early 1970s walk from Glenorchy via the Dart Rees Matukituki rivers to the old Aspiring Hut and up to Colin Todd Hut unreadiness for an ascent. Fascinating to see the lie of the land these days, especially with so little snow and ice.

Great job guys! I've never heard such a word as "Trailpinism" but from now on I'll ascribe it among my all-time favourites ;) I really think this "trail-approach" to high peaks will open up some incredible possibilities in the near future! Too bad to see glaciers covered with ashes and suffering the heat in that way though... As far as I remember climbing Aspiring was involving a lot of snowy ridges and snow fields...

Great job all. Did you climb around to the left of the ship owner ridge buttress or bypass it using the Therma glacier? I went up to the Ship Owner Ridge, and it looked like you needed to rappel down if you don't access the Therma glacier.

Very impressive team! What's your advice for tackling the waterfall slabs up Bevan col? I took the middle path and found it pretty spicy but I've recently heard there's some abseil bolts on the ridge.
