I think Patton said it best that, "Static Fortifications are monument's to the stupidity of man. If men can over come any obstical made by God (mountains, oceans, rivers ect.) Than anything created by man can be overcome."

Everyone bagging on that the Maginot line failed but it actually worked. It was such a defensive position that the Germans didn’t dare attack it. It’s not the Maginot line that failed. It was the French oversight in also building it along the Arden. And probably more importantly not taking reports of Germans moving through that region seriously.

And then, the French rolled over for the Nazis.

It was an amazing defensive system. It has one weakness… circumvention! A marvel of engineering and tactical defense but useless. A good offense is always better than a great defense. They would have been better off leaving a gap right in the middle so that the French could choose the battlefield instead of what happened, the Germans chose the battlefield.
