A look at the state of infrastructure in SA

Travellers on the road this festive season have been sending out images that attest to what experts have been saying - that South Africa's infrastructure is crumbling. So let's look at the state of infrastructure.

A report from the South Africa Institution of Civil Engineering published late last year suggests that the entire public infrastructure system in South Africa has collapsed or is in danger of collapse.

In its report card, it gave infrastructure a D which is the lowest rating since the report was first published in 2006.

An investigation by the Department of Public Works and infrastructure also suggests the country's road networks are in a mess,.

To discuss we're joined by Professor Mohamed Mostafa - Head of Civil Engineering at the University of KwaZulu-Natal.

The problem is the ones that knows and is skilled were replaced with people who don't have the foggiest idea to what to do or what must be done, it does not go about how well you do your job it is about skin colour, taking someone and shoving them into a job they have no knowledge of could be very confusing, but it's like the saying goes when that happens " taken and thrown into the deep side" this is basically what happened in this country .

This proposed R7billion repayment for e toils, why can't it be used to fix our roads network? repayment will lead to serious corruption.

A joke. Our street had a 60 pothole which we tried to report, but got bounced pillar to post. 1 year later we filled the hole with concrete. A week later, roads department arrived and with jackhammers Doug a trench 2m wide right across the road, including the concrete we poured and dumped the rumble on the pavement. Never to return.
No traffic could use the road and were making u turns to find an alternative route.

We purchased 2m cube crush stone and filled their mess so cars can get through.

That’s 2 years ago. They have never been back.

Incompetent! Failed state

Heavy vehicles such as trucks transporting goods on the road damages the road surface.Reduce the amount of heavy vehicles on the roads by using the railway systems to transport goods around the country. Please fix the railway system, this will help to grow the economy.

Amazing. Every contractor belongs to CIDB. Every technical manager belongs to ECSA. How about some ethics and morals workshops from both organizations. The rot has infiltrated most consulting engineers.

Our network can be upgraded with recycling technology but ignorance and incompetence stops this.

I think what they were trying to say, bad management, the money has all been taken, BEE has backfired, all been manifesting over the last 20 years or so.

Free States Roads was captured long time ago. They probably need a state construction company with integrity. Every problem has a solution. But corruption prevents this

You can rely on the SABC to suggest SANRAL which as the professor quickly points out it wont work!

Systems may be revised and devised but reality relies on the class of people allocated. The belief of a black person put into a certain monetary power, self gain is a priority rather than fulfilling the initial purpose. I believe the leadership cycle during apartheid would've changed their behavior and practices by now and gearing towards a developed state.
