Did Someone Manipulate The Stock Market?

Welcome to the craziest Monday in a while - Right off the bat the US stock market plummeted when it opened. But then the craziest thing happened, someone manipulated the market. All of a sudden a headline hits the wire services saying that Trump is considering suspending the tariffs for 90 days, so the market rallies hard… and then within minutes, the White House denies it and it plumets just as fast as it rallied. So whether someone intentionally manipulated the market or not, it does go to show how easy it would be for Trump to end this madness. The Blackrock CEO said today that we’re probably in a recession. But still Trump is doubling down. He says he’s going to apply an additional 50% on China on top of the already existing 54% tariff if China does not remove the 34% retaliatory tariff it hit the US with on Friday – So tariffs on China could reach 104%. When asked about the market collapsing he said: “sometimes you have to take your medicine” and said that the tariffs on China and the EU will not go away. Trump lashed out at people who are selling saying “don’t be weak! Don’t be stupid! Don’t be a Panican (a new party based on weak and stupid people).” The bill to curb Trump’s tariff power is gaining momentum, so much so that he has now reportedly issued a Veto threat should it pass. All around the world stock markets had trading suspended because of how fast the sell off was happening. Bill Ackman, one of Trump’s biggest supporters, said yesterday that the US was heading for a self-induced, economic nuclear winter. The EU seems to be trying to give Trump an out here - They have decided on retaliatory tariffs that will hit the US on April 15th, if Trump does not negotiate with them to have free trade between the continents. And lastly, Scott Bessent said that the federal workers - so the scientists, accountants, experts, and economists - that they fired from the government earlier this year will be the labor pool that can work in these new factories that the tariffs are supposedly going to create. Sounds totally legit.

If only the founding fathers had clearly stated that only the House of Representatives had the authority to issue tariffs. Oh wait, they did…

Not only is this completely avoidable, it also exposes how fragile the global economic system is. One mad man is enough to reverse a nation's prosperity and plunge us into stagnation (no growth + hyperinflation).

Tariffs only work if you have industry to protect. The US does not. All of that began moving out of the country in the late 80s. To rebuild from the ground up will take 20+ years and billions of dollars. You can't just build a factory, you have to build up the infrastructure, suppliers, and workforce that factory needs to function.

We spent 2-3 generations pushing our young adults towards college and white collar careers. Now people lament that our workforce “doesn't know how to put in an honest day's labor.” Yet these same people told their kids that blue collar was for people unwilling or unable to go to college. We have to own up to preaching that kids need a college degree to make something of themselves. We're paying for that mindset with the current shortage of plumbers, electricians, mechanics, HVAC techs, etc.

Our roads, bridges, tunnels, dams, levies and railroads are in terrible condition due to decades without repair/replacement/routine maintenance. Our steel industry is gone. Our mining industry is gone. These mills and mines were using antiquated equipment and technology before they closed. They cannot be reopened; there is no profit to be had. The equipment was scrapped and the sites leveled.

We have to import fertilizer, metals, pharmaceuticals, textiles, electronics. None of that is made here anymore. Tariffs aren’t the answer, because we have no products to protect. We're a service based economy. Other countries look to us for higher education, medical research, financial services, tourism, and the like. And an Ivy League educated businessman should know this.

Edited for typos.

"It looks like someone manipulated the market"

Wow, who could've imagined this could happen when 2 business men/billionaires are in charge of the country.

I'm beginning to believe that this is a strategic move to wipe out middle class private wealth. Real estate is dropping, as are commodities. What are the big boys gonna be able to buy on the cheap once all our investments are wiped out? Our farmland, our homes, our businesses.

Does trump not realise that the last time the US imposed mass tariffs that it helped trigger the Great Depression?
Edit: as many people have informed me, the tariffs only made the problem worse, but the depression was already in full swing

Easy to say “don’t be weak” when you aren’t living paycheck to paycheck like millions of Americans

The audacity of this man to effectively double the tariffs on China just because they responded in kind (with a smaller %) just shows how much of a child he is. “How dare you treat me the same way I treated you!”

Why is this reminding me of House of the Dragon season 2? When someone tells Prince Aemond that the citizens of King's Landing are starving after he cut even more resources from them, he says "we all have to make sacrifices." Meanwhile, he makes NO SACRIFICES AT ALL. Talk about art reflecting reality.
