I second the couchsurfing recommendation! I've only couchsurfed in the US and Europe, so I can't speak for the rest of the world, but it's an incredible resource and network. My parents started hosting in 2010, and I've CSed on my own and also as a family of 5. As long as you're smart about reading full profiles, it's a much safer experience than many people fear. Always read the references! Couchsurfers have definitely saved me at times where I didn't have anywhere else to stay, and if not for the couchsurfing community, I also would never have been on a Späti Crawl in Berlin! Workaway is another resource that friends of mine have done, but I don't personally have experience with.
