Mixed-sex civil partnerships make sense. Here's why – Alex Hern | In my opinion

Technology reporter Alex Hern and his female partner do not want to get married, because of the patriarchal roots of the institution.
They would be prepared to get a civil partnership, but this ceremony is only open to same-sex couples. Here he explains why the rights offered by this alternative should be extended to couples like his.

I was always under the impression that Civil Partnerships were for everyone regardless of orientation, gender identity or sex. Just seemed like an inclusive alternative to marriage, which made sense for an increasingly secular nation (socially at least).
Was surprised to find out this wasn't the case.

What is wrong with wanting to ensure that the rights to joint property, children born outside of marriage but within a long term relationship, and last requests/next of kin are protected in something OTHER than marriage?

I happen to agree with him on this... Women were considered chattel to be passed from father to husband- look at the tradition of taking your husbands name when you marry- it still happens... there is no LEGAL requirement to do so any more, but society looks at you strangely and questions the validity of your marriage and your children's legitimacy if you do not.

Personally, the church should not be involved in relationships, full stop. Its an agreement between a couple, regardless of gender... not a three way arrangement between the couple and the church.

Wouldn't it be easier to get government out of people's intimate relationships all-together?

The difference between the UK and France is that the UK is constitutionally Christian and France is constitutionally secular. The British state being Christian has no duty to sanctify a non-Christian form of partnership. That doesn't mean you can't live together, but if you're actively choosing not to participate in the institution of marriage you shouldn't be entitled to the benefits of it. Not to mention your whole argument against marriage is just one massive genetic fallacy.

Dear 20 year old Don't forget to rewatch your video on your wedding day 8-10 years from now. I said the exact same thing.... married for a few years now.

but why not just have a contract draw between two people???
maybe im being difficult but i have an issue with any label.
i'd rather just agree with someone like
1.this is how we'll relate
2. in the event of kids such and such will happen
3, in the event of a break up such and such

How about getting married in a court, not telling anyone (so the country recognizes it) then have your own arrangement on the side. Keep the whole thing quiet. I won't tell anyone promise. A civil partnership is the same thing as what I said only some of the wording is different.

I didn't really got the title, but now I do (not an english native).

Just want say, everyone can do what they want, I don't mind. It's just, gays want to marry, they fight for it. Now heteros don't want to get married and want the civil partnership for themself, but the gays are still not able to marry. At the end the heteros get their wish and the gays still can't get married.

Am I the only one who has to jiggle about this really sad irony here? Seriously World? Jesus Christ!!

You also have to ”take someone as your husband“ you're not just owning a wife lol if you're gonna take it literally, she's owning you.

If you think your partner would be free of patriarchal constraints and your own misogyny in a civil partnership, you're wrong, however stringently you avoid "taking [her] as your wife".

Civil Partnerships substitute the role of marriage while appeasing same sex marriage opponents. Why not just advocate for a single institution with the legal features you want?

Who doesn't?

this is the most unimaginative article ever . not an original thought or perception in the lot . honestly i think the reason why ya'll don't get married is cause you can't imagine any thing other than that which you've been told . and never thought to question the reality with out questioning the language . so depressing to see such intellectual capacity fold itself into a compliant automaton . Try thinking something new something outside the BETA box you stuck in . you can always be "right" or you can finally learn something you can't do both .

Mixed-sex marriage is a pure marriage.
The way it's supposed to be.
