Monark reviewed by Cameron Hawkins on PlayStation 5.

Monark has a lot of interesting ideas that could have come together into a great tactical JRPG, but what's here feels more like a prototype. Its Madness mechanic adds interesting choices to its fights, but is mostly irrelevant and annoying outside of combat. And while its well-voiced party members eventually grow on you, I wish I had more time to directly interact with them so I cared about their wellbeing when it came to major moments in the plot. The real drag, though, is the repetition in the mission structures, which is the same sequence of events and dull puzzles over and over again with very little variety.

This game is hard to love, especially on the switch. The dialogues are pretty well written. There's a demo, so people could always try it out first.

FURYU games tend to have the same faults. It's like they never learn from their mistakes. The games always start out fun with some cool ideas so they are at least worth checking out.

wow this game is difficult on the stage of many options during a fight but the puzzles makes it worth a while

When are JRPG developers going to learn that long straight hallway dungeons, repetitive visuals, and the a gameplay loop that never iterates on itself or changes signicantly in difficulty just aren't working anymore?

The grinding doesn't bother me....its that the game forces you to grind some major levels (about 20) in the last segment, that would sound easy in any other JRPG but levels in this game are literally bought with spirit, and later battles give you about 1000....to when you need 8, 000 to buy a skill...that's it, the ridiculous slow part of the grinding is what kills it. Everything else is a solid 6.

The ranking system is also pretty terrible. You really don't get to have fun with resonating and powering up if you're aiming to get high scores per fight. Huge oversight.

Aesthetically it reminds me of The Caligula Effect, combat-wise it reminds me of Death End;Re-Quest.
