The Metroid Franchise - Which Are Worth Playing/Buying?

This year marks the 35th anniversary of Metroid, the loveable bounty hunting, genre defining, child that Nintendo loves to forget about. Except to everyone’s surprise Nintendo did remember this year and are celebrating with Metroid 5, aka Metroid Dread, the first brand new 2D Metroid game in quite a long time.

So long in fact that there is a whole generation of people that have never experienced just how good classic Metroid is, and are looking at all the excitement Dread is causing, and they’re curious.

Zero mission is my best recommendation for getting into the series! It's a remake for the NES original that gives it Super Metroid level of play. It also includes the original nes version once you beat it!

The first Metroid was a phenomenal game... in the late 80s. My cousin and I would play as a team. One playing the game, and the other making a map on graph paper and helping to navigate.
These days however... I'd recommend Zero Mission. Even as someone who loved the NES Metroid as a kid I know I wouldn't have the patience to play it again.

I remember beating Metroid 2 as a young lad on the gameboy back in the day. It was so satisfying when I finally beat the game. I remember getting lost and going back and forth for hours and hours until I found that one spot to continue my journey . =)

1:16 mark my words: the Wii U will be remembered in Nintendo history as the preservation machine (aside from being a prototype Switch). Will likely skyrocket in value in about 10-15 years time

My god when I here the theme song for super Metroid I still get chills. Super Metroid was my introduction to video games.

Playing metroid prime trilogy is one of the best ports ive ever seen. really worth it

I'd recommend playing metroid fusion and super metroid. The atmosphere and soundtrack for both games are good and give an "Aliens" vibe to them.

I will answer that one very fast:

ALL of them.
Some of the Metroid games are among the best games of all time.
And even the "bad" games like Metroid 2 and Other M are still very much worth your time.

Why Nintendo hasn't released a 2D Metroid Collection on Switch is beyond me. That's free money basically.

I played Metroid on my NES for the first time a few years ago, and absolutely loved it. No internet guides or anything. Got an 18x24 inch peice of paper and drew out a grid map as I explored. It felt so good to beat the game that way

I think "Metroid Prime: Hunters" on NDS deserve to be mentioned here. It was the perfect 3d first person shooter on any handheld with an intuitive control scheme and great exploration design.

I love the shine spark puzzles in zero mission. They're so fun to figure out and actually take a reasonable amount of execution and skill. And then once you learn how to do them you can use the techniques you learn to help you speed run the game.

Most of them are good but Super Metroid and Metroid Prime are the two must haves of the franchise imho
Both are masterclasses in game design

Metroid fusion is personally my favorite game mostly because the soundtrack is amazing and really set the mood for the game. It’s essentially the same reason why you like zero mission. And I’m happy that both of our favorites hold up to the rest of time
