Where to CHECK on the OM642 Mercedes Diesel Engine for Fuel leaks. In this video, I will show the most likely areas on your OM642 engine to be the cause of a diesel fuel leak. Although this video features the OM642 engine, the areas to check will be common across many other Mercedes diesel engines and look very similar.

Are you experiencing a Diesel smell in car )which can easily be confused with exhaust smell in car)? or maybe you have noticed exhaust fumes in car, especially coming through the heater vents when you pull up to a stop sign or traffic lights, then chances are that you have a diesel leak on your Mercedes diesel engine.

These fuel vapors can make you smell exhaust in car, when it is actually a fuel smell in car. It’s very easy to confuse the two depending on how sensitive you nose is!

In the case of a leaking fuel injector, it has a fuel supply pipe and a fuel return hose. In the past, I have had to tighten the fuel supply connection a little bit to fix a diesel leak, so this is a good area to check. I have also found worn return line connection O rings, also known as leak off pipe O rings and had to replace them.

AND Spoiler alert – The leak on my car was on the diesel fuel filter, so I will show you how I fixed it on my diesel engine

The Mercedes Benz diesel that features in this Diesel smell in car Diesel leak video is a Mercedes Diesel CLK 302cdi, which has the Mercedes OM642 engine fitted. If this video helped you fix your fuel leak and get rid of your fuel smell in car problem.

Thanks man! You saved my trip. I found out that the hole in the filter was leaking fuel right before taking off. I'm not a knowledgeable person in cars but your instructions are very straightforward. Thanks to your video I was able to fix the problem in no time. Keep up the great work!

Oh yes this video helped me! I didn’t know how to detach those clamps an i was afraid of working on the fuel filter, but seeing how easy and reusable are those clamps I will be changing them for sure!!

There is also a set of low pressure lines running from the fuel return back to the fuel tank. It's behind the engine.

Another leak you may find where you have connection on the turbo.Oil drip into plug/socket for Swirl Flap Motor which is near fuel filter. Then only 4.7kOhm resister will help to sort limp mode :)

Great video. Can you tell me where I can buy those specific replacement fuel hose clamps - can't see them anywhere on ebay or amazon?

Just had my high pressure replaced and the low pressure hose and also, the injector hard line torqued down on injector 2… all that solved mine 😂

Hi Phil, thanks for your videos.
I don't speak English so I don't understand your explanations. I try to read the subtitles. ..
I have a Mercedes R with an OM642 engine and for a year it starts badly when it has been stopped for a few days or when it is cold. The glow plugs are new, battery is ok and starter motor ok, injectors are ok.
However, after starting up if I wait 5 or 8 seconds it starts up perfect.
I have the feeling that air is entering the diesel circuit and the tube is being discharged while it is stopped. Once started, turn it off and it starts again the first time all day.
What seals would you change or review?
Thank you

Checking a few vids re the V6 service and it appears a bit more involved than the 220, even changing the air filters seems to be complicated !

Please help. Could this be the reason for my white smoke and 2020-1 code (low fuel rail pressure)? 2006 ML320. Mechanic says injectors are fine. Changed intake and pcv valve seals

I think that with a non-return valve located between the tank and the diesel filter the problem of the circuit being emptied should be solved.
Does the Mercedes R with the OM642 engine have any original non-return valve? Where? I don’t know.
Thanks Phil.

I have 2 small leaks from hoses. One on the filter next you your leaking hose which fixed and one on the hose going to the high pressure pump. I’ve not yet fixed this one. Will these leaks be a possible cause for poor performance (juddering at low revs)

I have a really odd diesel leak coming from the back of the engine... I can't find the source and neither could my local mechanic.. fuel lines all fine, injectors and return lines seem fine, fuel filter fine... I'm out of ideas.
