another reason is that the rubber in both the transmission mounts, and either or both motor mounts has degraded. the shift lever itself can contact the hole through the floor, causing the gear to not be engaged all the way, or the whole engine/transmission assembly can shift forward, backward, or lean side to side bumping the lever out of gear.

Regarding the boot tugging; a lot of people tend to reinstall the boot mechanism incorrectly which also leads to the tugging problem.

John. My 1980 B on decell with fall out of forth and third. I actually have to hold the shifter in place when I come off the gas because shortly after I do the trany just walks out of the gear. Might that be the detent spring pressure or is more major ? Thanks for your great vids, keep them coming, I am learning a great deal.

I have a 75 midget went to put it in reverse and now the shifter flops around won't go into any gear. where do I start to fix this. what happened?

Hi my magnette zb varitone is hard to engage 2nd, 4th and reverse gears but 1st and third are fine . any help much apprieciated

I have a question for everyone and anyone. I'm having a problem with my MGB box. When the box it warm (after a good 30 miles) 1st 2nd and 3rd gear seem to slip. like oil on the clutch but then kick in like normal then fade out again. Once left to cool works fine?! Does anyone have any idea what this could be? Just replaced the gear oil and gearbox mounts (following Mr Twists fantastic video on mounting positions) Thankyou

I have a mg midget 1500. See the video in the link below. Are 2nd and 3rd gear supposed to move like this? I should add that I rebuilt the transmission last year, drove it without issues other than it was hard to get out of 3rd gear.
