Belgrade could see Cairo-level heat by 2050 | DW News

Urban green spaces are essential for air quality and help balance city temperatures. In Belgrade, the capital of Serbia, large-scale construction has significantly reduced the percentage of urban green cover, thus contributing to unbearable heat waves in summer.

Environment experts say the prizing of private interests over public benefit is the main reason why urban green spaces — which are essential for air quality and the regulation of temperatures — are being replaced by concrete buildings.

This phenomenon is on the rise in Belgrade, the capital of Serbia, where the concrete jungle is spreading, robbing the city of its green cover. This, coupled with climate change, means that summers in Belgrade are becoming unbearable.

In fact, Serbian meteorologists expect weather conditions in the city to be similar to those in Egypt's capital, Cairo, by 2050.

I remember as a kid(~17 years ago), in Eastern Europe, not being allowed to go outside one day because 30C was a new high, considered “extreme heat”.
Yesterday went outside and it was 37C in shadow, 48C on pavement. The heat is getting insane

Bad investments, when cities become uninhabitable, less rent is collected. The evaporation of water through trees lowers the temperature.

I live in a small town near the capital, I worked there for almost 4 years, studied for 5. I cannot state how happy I am that I work from home and live in that very same small town I grew up in. No traffic jams, no rush hours, no concrete jungle. It's peace and quiet here, even though it's scorching hot, but at least I can walk around freely and enjoy more grass and plants than concrete.

But Belgrade really has a lot of woods, park and greenery in general, when you come from Athens for example you're struck by contrast from the air, so I don't think it is the primary reason, especially because temperatures are high in the rural areas also.

I don’t understand why entire north Balkan is more hotter than Greece or Turkey, right now.
If climate change is real Greece and Turkey must be hotter not colder.
Right now temperature in Belgrade is 38c and in Corfu, Greece is 32, how the Greece do not have Cairo temperatures and 600 km up north we have?

То би значило да у неком селу где нема асфалта и бетона треба да буде 10 степени нижа температура, а није тако!

I remember going out to play with kids in neighborhood as a child. I always had to carry a hoodie because it would get cold in the evening while 35C was an unseen temperature. Today, 35C in the summer is considered a norm with well over 40C on the hot asphalt.
