"i dont have a lord anymore.. CRIME!" is the best way to sum up most of samurai history

Fun fact, there was a historical duel between a Dutch tourist with a rapier and a Japanese samurai with a katana. The duel ended in a double, the Dutchman dying on the spot, and the samurai a week later from infection

Its also really funny- did a paper on kabuki theatre and the government just could not get them to stop hiring prostitutes.

ironicaly the "dishonorable" ninjas actually fit the fictional "honorable samurai" archetype better than the actual samurai. Keeping your word as a ninja was a good way to get (and/or keep) repeat customers, and ninja were trained to commit suicide upon capture. The suicide was less for "honor" and more to avoid being tortured for information on their clan's spies...

Samurai in fiction: You are a formidable enemy, our duel shall be legendary!

Samurai in history: You are a formidable enemy! Which is why me and my friend here are gonna jump you now.

"So....basically just knights?"

"Yup, not much difference"

funnily enough, although ninja are usually portrayed as the sneaky, dishonourable sort, opposing the samurai, ninja were much more honourable, since they at least wouldn't betray you on the spot for slightly more pay

Whats funny is that
The first way was how they were supposed to act give or take
The second way was how alot of them WOULD act

this was basically an argument that someone used to explain that samurai jack was basically a heroic ronin and not a traditional samurai which makes perfect sense minus all the crime jack didn't really do

I think what still cracks me up is how the samurai, who are often depicted in fiction to be honour bound warriors with great bravery and righteousness, were quite backstabby and traitorous in real history. BUT the NINJA, who are often shown as backstabby, shadowy spies and assassins, were usually much more loyal and dedicated to their lords.

Guns are dishonorable, but Guns bring victory, and victory wipes away all dishonor!

Samurai in fiction: the gun is a coward's weapon, a true warrior fights and dies by the blade!

Samurai in reality: I FUCKING LOVE GUNS!

"My honour would never compel me to betray my lord!"

Completely true. It's hard for honour you don't have to compel anything.

One of my favorite things about The Hidden Fortress was how "we have an honorable grumpy samurai, but the other guys have GUN" was integral to the plot
And therefore also became integral to the plot of Star Wars
