Advanced People Always Do The Basics

How I got here…

21: Graduated Vanderbilt in 3 years Magna Cum Laude, and took a fancy consulting job.
23 yrs old: Left my fancy consulting job to start a business (a gym).
24 yrs old: Opened 5 gym locations.
26 yrs old: Closed down 6th gym. Lost everything.
26 yrs old: Got back to launching gyms (launched 33). Then, lost everything for a 2nd time.
26 yrs old: In desperation, started licensing model as a hail mary. It worked.
27 yrs old: "Gym Launch" does $3M profit the next 6 months. Then $17M profit next 12 months.
28 yrs old: Started Prestige Labs. $20M the first year.
29 yrs old: Launched ALAN, a software company for agencies to work leads for customers. Scaled to $1.7mmo within 6 months.
31 yrs old: Sold 75% of UseAlan to a strategic buyer in an all stock deal.
31 yrs old: Sold 66% of Gym Launch & Prestige Labs at $46.2M valuation in all-cash deal to American Pacific Group. (you can google it)
32 yrs old: Started making free content showing how we grow companies to make real business education accessible to everyone (and) to attract business owners to invest or scale their businesses.

Today: Our portfolio now does $200M/yr between 10 companies. The largest doing $100M/yr the smallest doing $5M per year. Our ownership varies between 20% and 100% ownership of the companies. Many of them we invested in early and helped grow (which is how we make our money - not youtube videos).

To all the gladiators in the arena, we’re all in the middle of writing our own stories. The worse the monsters, the more epic the story.

You either get an epic outcome or an epic story. Both mean you win.

Keep crushing. May your desires be greater than your obstacles.

Never quit,

Alex

*FULL DISCLOSURE*
I make content to make money - just - on a longer time horizon than most. I want to build trust with business owners so we can find the best ones and help them scale. And if they’re awesome, write them a check and go all the way as partners.

Same goes for sales. I've been trying to learn the magic formula to close more business and then I just realized that the only thing I needed to do is to have more interactions. Sales is not complicated, you just need to get used to the "nos" a lot.

Same is true for dancing (and I imagine it's one of those lessons that you learn going down any discipline). People see these fast moves or impressive "illusions" and imagine it's really complex, when really all you've done is polish your basics and fundamentals to their absolute utmost. The advanced, nine times out of ten, are just the fundamentals at their most precise and efficient level of execution.

The same goes for training. When I switch to "push-ups, pull-ups, dips and squats" routine - I have way better results and I do train less!

I started my company when I was 21. It took me 9 years to get my company to where it is now and I feel as if we haven’t even hit ground zero yet. And I can whole heartedly say most of the motivational speakers are over simplifying and bullshit.

So true. Unfortunately a lot of people only want to be successful to impress other people. Basic isn't sexy and doesn't appeal to the ego so nothing gets done because it isn't impressive enough.

I always enjoy hearing this guy BUT as a musician, you get much better at the ‘basics’ over the years which translates to overall better playing.

The people that think it’s more complicated are simply looking for handouts. That’s why they think it’s so hard, they would rather take the easy way out.

Thank you so much sir. As a fulltime author this really hit home. I feel people want complexity because it justifies failure. If it's so hard and complex they didn't make it. If it's mastering the fundamentals thats where most people quit because they don't want to be bored.

MY major issue is actually selling my books. And feeling like people will buy them over free books. I'm rethinking my strategy and tactics for actual money

In a lot of ways it's the same with lifting, shooting, and studying. I appreciate the reminder Alex.

It’s a crime I can’t save all these reels to a playlist in mobile. I need these at the ready. So insightful and motivating!

Wooohooo, its not complexity its scale. You cant scale complexity, leverage cmplixity or monetize it, it has to be simple or it will fall apart . Always on point Alex, Thanks .

A professional is able to replicate their results over and over again. Sure you can hit a strike while bowling but can you do it over and over and over again?

I fear not the man who has practiced 10, 000 kicks once, but I fear the man who has practiced one kick 10, 000 times.
