Think of it this way- he saw first hand how valuable the Avengers really were, because without them he had to destroy his universe to make up for their lack. His punishment was not so much to punish him as to make him responsible for never letting the Avengers die again, not to punish him, but to make sure the restnof thr multiverse never suffered what his universe had to.
