"We want everybody to have the right to vote, but we really only want the right to vote."
That is the most succinct and accurate description of the voter ID rules I have ever heard.

Unbelievable that student id and younger people's railcards are excluded. I thought it was a joke, but looked it up on the government's website. Not there. Incredible.

Trouble is, that's not actually satire. It's a word for word demonstration of what our present elected leaders think.

"We want everybody to have the right to vote... but we really only want the RIGHT to vote".

Perfect summary!

Interesting fact: I wrote to Huw Merriman, my local MP and as it happens a Tory. I asked 1) How many national and local election results had been swung as a result of electoral fraud?, 2) What % of all votes cast are thought to be fraudulent? and c) Can he be 100% sure the ID requirements are equal to all voting groups?

He replied within a day (credit where due and all that), ignored point three, said he'd have to ask colleagues about points 1&2 and would get back to me. He hasn't.

He did manage to vote for these reforms however, seemingly happy to change decades old voting requirements without having any facts to hand.

Please please please can someone catch a prominent member of the government forgetting their photo ID, and telling the local government employee 'don't you know who I am ?'

Fixing a problem that doesn't exist, typical Government action.

I used to be a Polling Officer for Elections, stopped as I got older finding it too hard to work from 6am to 11pm or even later, most of that time not even being allowed a comfort break. Anyway what I was going to say was there are so many checks and balances in the current system voter fraud is very rare.

"...we want everybody to have the right to vote, but we really only want the right to vote" - should be a Led By Donkeys poster that one. Sehr gut, Herr Grun.

The silly thing is that you will actually be able to have a postal vote without having submit a photo ID to prove who you are.

Spot on yet again Matt! I applied for my voter ID card yesterday, my council gave me the opportunity to give feedback about their service, room for 2500 characters of feedback. I gave them about 2450 characters of feedback, not about their service 'cos they do OK in trying circumstances, but about the fascist, anti-democratic voter suppression tactics of the Tory scum currently ruining our country! Very cathartic I must say.

Matt Green is without any doubt, not a fraud. The real deal in every utterance with humour. Cheers.

I once had to get a written statement to confirm who I was, from an authoritative figure, to submit to the Open University (think it was for a loan for their courses). Of course I went to my local police station with photo ID in hand (passport, driver's licence and some utility bills). The police officer refused to sign anything because "ID is so easily faked that the police cannot accept any ID as real". That was shocking to me!

Ask for a postal vote, take it to the polling station on polling day.
