EP126.4 - Outlander PHEV uses Charge Mode for better fuel economy?

Wow, what a surprise! The fuel economy was fantastic on our way home. I used the charge mode (instead of save) to recharge the battery as much as possible before we hit the city. Does this really makes a difference?

This 1of my favourite. In charge mode. It's how I would drive it as I too do alot of highway miles per day and inner city as well. Glad to see it's impressed you and me !

Great video, thanks from a British Columbia PHEV guy! I really enjoyed the scenery. It makes me want to take a holiday down under. I don't find that the charge mode reduces the highway fuel consumption significantly. I use it for free way stints all the time.

Thanks you Andy for a thoughtfully created and informative video! Been driving my beloved PHEV for 4 years and never tried the CHARGE mode..I'm a dummy obviously.. good onya mate!

Hey Andy - this is exactly what I've been finding. Using charge mode on fast highway driving then going back to normal hybrid mode until the battery drops, and repeat etc... gives me better figures than just driving on a single charge. I get about 6l per 100km for 150-170km trips (nearly flat all the way too)... everyone on the FB page (bar one or two) always goes on about the 'charge mode' being the one thing not to use. I'm using it!

Hi Andy, I'm a new viewer, and I am really enjoying your real world review, I have just purchased the latest Outlander PHEV. I love the car, but since it's brand new I only did city driving on electricity charging the electric motor at work. That gives me around 80km range. I am about to embark on a highway trip these holidays from Sydney to Canberra. I am willing to try the Charge mode on highway and EV in city, as per your advice and see how I go. I'm really looking forward to the results. Cheers.

I do some long drives, and my finding on highway driving is that it's best to use electric power for hills and city driving, then switch to charge mode on 100km/ph flat or down hill highway drives.

AHH, I must have closed the Live Chat Well, that's not good as I cannot re-open it. I'm sorry guys. I'll try better next time. It was the first time we tried the new YouTube Premiere feature. How about we do this every Sunday now and hang out in Live chat for a while (until I accidentally close it again, hahaha). Please let me know if the time was OK or if you want me to start say 2-3h later?!

Hi Andy, thanks for your numbers in $/100mi and also €/100km calculation.

Hi guys, hope you are all coming to the livechat on Sunday. I'll be here one hour earlier to answer some questions. Not sure how this Premiere think here works but we will figure it out :)

The car may not be able to balance the cells with out a full charge but try leaving it plugged in for a while maybe that may help.

Hi Andy, you've discover the motorway charge secret! Yes it works, I've been driving about 6 months like this. You use the best petrol efficiency ( motorway) and charge and then ev in town. If you are ever on a short trip you ev and on a long trip you always have motorway so this car works no matter where you go :)
One extra tip... watch your throttle use when charging up a steep incline. I've found it sits around 10l/100 but will jump to around 18 if you load the engine to much, like an overdrive kind of thing. I find eco mode helps and even go to ev only up a steep hill and then charge again as it levels out ;)
Driving like this is the essence of a hybrid, using all its facilities to best advantage.

Hi, we get a used 4WD Outlander beside our Zoe to compensate for the old Passat for pulling horses. So I would love to learn more about this car. We want to utilize the battery as good as possible as we are EV fans. How to you connect the PheV watchdog with the Outlander? Does a standard dongle work? The charge mode looks strange to us as we would use basically a oil power plant instead of regenerative energy. How can we avoid this?

Hi Andy, one question. Do you think exhaust pipes and all the stuff under the vehicle is highly exposed? Have you ever had any problem off-road?

Hello just for your information once the charge mode charges the battery to 80% or what ever it then becomes a keep mode there is no difference from that point on regardless how far you drive therefore can not be any mileage benefits. Thanks

Sometimes the engine gets loud when driving in charge mode and acceleration power feels decreased. Mitsubishi explains this is because the gas engine is being directed to recharge the battery. That makes sense but it’s unpleasant when driving. The engine loudness is relieved if I turn charge mode off.
2019 PHEV. Anyone have any expert experience with this phenomenon?

Andy shut down the interior ceiling light to improve EV range :)
