Correction: these shoes DO NOT return more energy than the runner expends, that’s scientifically impossible. Nike’s statement is accurate. A more accurate summary of these shoes is that they return more energy to the runner than competing shoes designs.

Wearing these shoes is not cheating. It is in every runner’s best interest to pick the optimal shoe design that returns the most energy. If a runner chooses a sub-optimal shoe design, they are agreeing to whatever disadvantage that choice may put them in. Ideally, any governing committee should mandate that every runner wears the same shoes for consistency.

These shoes were not banned for “cheating”. They were banned because several athletes take sponsorship deals from shoe companies that restrict them from wearing other shoe brands (I.E. an Adidas-sponsored athlete can not publicly wear Nike Vaporflys). Vaporflys will likely be unbanned once Nike’s competitors create equally competitive designs.

Can we take a moment to appreciate the Nike guy's hair

What if we just ban shoes entirely? Completely even playing field.

As someone who races in them they are completely insaine for the first couple runs but then you get used to them and get like 10 percent faster
Edit: 10 percent was an overstate but my 1.5 mile time was 10 second faster approx

First of all Eliud Kipchoge didn’t wear Vaperflys, he wore an alphafly prototype shoe that was later released to the public. Second of all they are not banned in competition and they do not return more energy than the runner puts it

Eliud Kipchoge broke the 2 hour threshold with the alphafly, not the vaporfly

It boils down to energy return, the typical shoe gives back roughly 1% while the vaporfly 4% was shown to return an average of 4% (hence the name). The second iteration came with the same rigid plate and more foam and returned roughly the same figure with some evidence showing increased return, not necessarily more energy. The iteration which was shown was the, at the time, experimental alphafly. The shoe was insane and had 3 separate carbon plates unlike the first 2 and had more pebax foam giving an unholy amount of energy return, which that one was banned. Today the current alphafly has a maximum thickness of exactly 40mm and only 1 distinct carbon plate to adjust to the rules and is allowed for competition. It’s an amazing shoe that has undoubtedly changed running for the future. -love the content❤️
