BAM welcomed Lynne Ramsay for a Q&A following the New York premiere of You Were Never Really Here, opening night of the retrospective, Tough Love: Cinema by Lynne Ramsay.
You Were Never Really Here opens Apr 13 at BAM Rose Cinemas
Ramsay’s first feature in six years confirms her to be one of contemporary cinema’s most daring and distinctive voices. In a can’t-look-away performance of simmering intensity, Joaquin Phoenix plays a hitman dealing with PTSD and his own death drive as he sets out on a potentially life-ending mission to rescue a kidnapped girl. With tour-de-force editing and typically intricate sound design (including a bravura Jonny Greenwood score), Ramsay crafts a gut-punching thriller that doubles as a psychic X-ray of a scarred mind.
